An uncommon legacy - Seattle Civil War Veteran saw a great-granddaughter become an officer in WWII

This is the Seattle gravesite of Catherine M. Henry at Evergreen cemetery. Miss Henry was the great-granddaughter of Seattle Civil War veteran Daniel Reams. Reams fought with the 75th Illinois Infantry and was wounded 4 times during the war. He lived until 1943 and saw 12 of his great-grandchildren serve in the US military during WWII, including Catherine. She enlisted in 1942 and was later a Captain in the Womens Army Corps, the first time women formally served in the US military in a non-nurse role. Daniel Reams was very proud of his descendants service in the war and was alive to witness his great-granddaughter’s promotion to an officer in this ground-breaking role for women in the military.
