Seattle at Gettysburg

A special extended tour on the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg

  • 18.63 US dollars
  • G.A.R. Cemetery Park, Seattle

Service Description

This special extended tour will tell the story of the Battle of Gettysburg through the personal histories of the dozens of Seattle Civil War veterans who fought in the pivotal battle. Thousands of former soldiers made Western Washington home in the decades in the war, bringing not just their families and aspiration, but their individual histories as Civil War soldiers. Significant numbers of them had fought in July 1863 at Gettysburg. Seattleites fought in every aspect of the battle, in both Blue and Gray. Take a journey back to 1863 by way of Seattle's historic cemeteries and the veterans buried there. Learn about the fight in McPherson's woods or Oak Ridge on the first day through the eyes of Seattle's veterans. Defend Culp's Hill or charge into the Wheatfield with Seattle veterans. Make the fateful journey across the open plain of Pickett's Charge with Seattle Confederates. Stand with Seattle men at the stone wall and defend the high-water mark of the Confederacy. The walking tour will last approximately two hours and visit both Seattle's Grand Army of the Republic cemetery and neighboring historic Lake View cemetery. The total walking distance will be approximately 1.5 miles, with some slight inclines and/or uneven ground. It is possible to travel some of the distance by car of you wish, for less walking between points. The tour is offered at a special rate of $18.63 in honor of the anniversary of the battle and to make it affordable for anyone who wishes to attend. No charge for children under 12 if with parents.
